Tip#2: Skills + Experience = Opportunity
By Jane Lowder, Max Coaching
In this market every job ad posted attracts several hundred applications. Because it is largely an employers’ market, employers can be very particular about who to hire.
The bulk of opportunities fall to those who have relevant and recently demonstrated skills and experience. So what can you do if you don’t have these?
If you have recently upskilled in an area and wish to find opportunities to apply these new skills sooner than the market will allow, consider pursuing relevant volunteer work.
Websites like Good Company and Fido call for people with specific skills to assist community organisations with specific, time-limited projects. Often these projects can be completed from home around work and family commitments.
Other good volunteering opportunities can arise with family or friends who conduct business or ventures in sectors that are relevant to your career goals.
Make sure you include details of this voluntary work on your resume. You should state the name of the organisation, describe the nature of the project and outline your achievements and contributions.
